Residential Service Upgrade
A homeowner goes from 100 amp to 200 amp service. The electrical system is safer, protects from power surges, and allows space for new circuits. Finally a world where you can use the microwave and the lights!
The homeowner reached out to us to increase the electrical service from 100 amps to 200 amps. The catalyst for the project was a new hybrid car that would not charge enough overnight using a traditional 120V plug.
We replaced the meter with a 200a meter-disconnect combo. Now, first responders can cut power to the house without having to enter the house or beat the meter off while under load. As an added bonus the meter has up to 8 breaker slots making it easy to add outdoor circuits, like a car charging port.
The new Eaton panel is much more spacious, accommodating an eye watering 80 breakers, should the need present itself.
The panel also has an Eaton whole home surge protection device. These little guys cast an umbrella of protection from voltage surges coming from inside or outside the home. With fine electronics making their way into everything from the fridge to the TV, it is an affordable way to protect the electronics in your house.
Finally, we reestablished a quality connection to ground and provided a point for other utilities to ground off of, by installing 2 new ground rods, an intersystem bonding point, and a new connection to the incoming water meter, all connected with a #4 solid copper wire.
This project increases safety and gives the homeowner ample room for new circuits in the house. Now the microwave can be used with the lights and the car will charged and ready to go in the morning.
